The 20th British Academy Games Awards (BAFTA Game Awards 2024) ceremony took place on April 11, 2024, celebrating the gaming triumphs of 2023. Held at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, comedian Phil Wang kept the night lively. The biggest champion of the evening was Baldur’s Gate 3, taking home the coveted gongs for Best Game, Narrative, and Music. This richly detailed RPG clearly captivated the judges.

This prestigious ceremony, often referred to as the BAFTAs, highlighted the industry’s creative diversity with a record-breaking 40 titles vying for honours across 18 categories. The ceremony also recognized the incredible work of UK charity SpecialEffect, awarding them the prestigious Special Award.

Nintendo also enjoyed a stellar night. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder triumphed in their respective categories, proving the enduring power of the iconic franchise. However, despite its impressive nine nods, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could only swing away with a single award, highlighting the fierce competition within the industry.

Beyond Baldur’s Gate 3’s dominance, the ceremony saw a delightful spread of winners. Remedy Entertainment walked away with two awards – Artistic Achievement and Audio Achievement – for the highly anticipated Alan Wake 2. Viewfinder, a surprise contender, garnered double the honours, securing both the New Intellectual Property and Best British Game categories.

The 2024 BAFTAs solidified their position as a defining night for the gaming industry. It was a ceremony that celebrated established giants, rising stars, and the sheer creativity that continues to push the boundaries of interactive entertainment and here is the complete list of winners.

As per a Reddit post, Sony is working with an Emulation expert company called Implicit Conversions which is entitled to bring more PS1/PSP classics to PS4/PS5. The emulation company Implicit Conversions boasts former Ubisoft employees alongside talent from Sony, where some members were instrumental in developing the PCSX2 PS2 emulator

Implicit Conversions, a studio working on PS2 emulation (unclear for what platform), gained unexpected attention due to a retracted interview on TimeExtension claiming they bring PS2 games to PS5. However, they retracted those statements back, but the Reddit post clarifies what the company is working on.

As mentioned in the Reddit post, Implicit Conversions’ website description has been updated to reflect that they are now working on bringing games from the original PlayStation 1, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 2 to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox consoles.

In addition to that, Implicit Conversions’ LinkedIn page mentions that they are collaborating with Sony Interactive Entertainment / PlayStation to bring PS1, PS2, and PSP games to the PS4 and PS5. The information further states that Disney Interactive, Bandai Namco, Square Enix, Konami, Capcom, Team17, and Bend Studio are among their clients and publishers.

Despite the PS2 emulation confusion, PS Plus subscribers remain eager for more PS2 classics on the service, as it’s been a constant request since the PS Plus update.

Implicit Conversions is a consulting company founded in 2019 by retro-gaming enthusiasts. They develop the Syrup Emulation Engine to bring classic games like NES and PS1 titles to modern consoles like PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, allowing gamers to relive past favourites.

With the PlayStation Plus Premium tier, one can access to a library of classic PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PSP games that you can download and play directly on your PS4 or PS5 console. This is the tier you’d want for PS2 and PS1 classics.

The Battlefield franchise has seen yet another Creative Director depart last month. As spotted by Battlefield Bulletin, Craig Morrison, the current Studio Creative Director, left the Battlefield franchise in February 2024 to join Blue Scarab Entertainment. This follows the departure of Marcus Lehto, who left to lead Ridgeline Games before its closure by EA.

Battlefield franchise onboarded Craig Morrison as the Creative Director in August 2021. In December 2022, he took over as Studio Creative Director, succeeding “Mr. Battlefield” Lars Gustavsson. Morrison left the franchise in February 2024 to join Blue Scarab Entertainment, according to information on his LinkedIn page.

Enno Rehling founded Blue Scarab in December 2021. The small team, with around a dozen members, includes some who worked on previous games from Toadman Interactive and Arrowhead (creators of Helldivers 2). Their first project and the exact size of the studio remain a mystery, but they’re busy “crafting a new gaming experience.”

This is the second time in 2024 alone that a Creative Director has departed the franchise; normally, this kind of situation happens when a project is coming to a conclusion. The Ridgeline Games Creative Director, Marcus Lehto, also departed the company last month. Not too long afterwards, EA declared that it was terminating 670 workers, along with Ridgeline Games.

Battlefield’s Future Faces Potential Roadblocks

While the recent departure of a key developer was confirmed to be voluntary, it adds to the uncertainty surrounding the franchise. Battlefield has been challenged by competition, particularly from Call of Duty, and recent releases like Battlefield 2042 have been met with issues at launch.

Previously, leadership expressed hopes of expanding the Battlefield universe. The development team still has support studios, but the core challenge of defining Battlefield’s identity and keeping it relevant in the modern gaming landscape might hinder those plans.

Battlefield 2042‘s launch was a bumpy ride. Technical problems like bugs, crashes, and performance issues plagued the game regardless of platform. Adding to the frustration, many players felt the content fell short of expectations. This could manifest as a lack of maps or game modes compared to past titles, or a stripped-down single-player experience.

On top of technical and content issues, some core gameplay design decisions, like replacing traditional classes with specialists or specific map design choices, didn’t resonate well with a portion of the fanbase. This combination of factors resulted in a launch that felt unfinished and frustrated many players, impacting its reception and player base.

Microsoft Announces Multiplatform Releases for Xbox Games Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, Grounded and Pentiment

Following several rumours surfaced earlier this month, Microsoft confirmed 4 of its popular Xbox games will be released on its rival consoles, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

The Xbox podcast that was held last week discussed Xbox’s future plans regarding its gaming landscape strategy. During the podcast, Xbox Head Phil Spencer revealed that they are considering four games to go multiplatform to reach more audiences and bring other console users together. However, he did not mention any names for the titles until Microsoft published an official blog listing their names and releases.

Four Xbox Games Coming to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch

The four Xbox-exclusive games that are going to be released on PS5 and Switch include Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, Pentiment and Grounded. Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves are only coming to PlayStation while the latter two are coming to both platforms. According to sources, it is expected that they will arrive on Nintendo in the following months.

  • Hi-Fi Rush: a hit rhythm-action game from Bethesda where players control a character whose attacks and movements are directly tied to the music. The game will be available to pre-order from PlayStation Store, starting Feb 22. The game is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on Mach 19, 2024.
  • Sea of Thieves: With its unique pirate-themed world, the game has attracted more than 35 million players around the world. Available to wishlist on PS Store from Feb 22, the game will be launched on April 30 on PS5.
  • Grounded: The co-op survival game from Obsidian is now available across all platforms. The game will be released on April 16 on PS,4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
  • Pentiment: a historical murder mystery RPG with branching narratives heavily influenced by player choices, released on February 22nd on Switch, PS4/PS5.

Microsoft revealed its multiplatform plans shortly after Nintendo announced Grounded and Pentiment for the Switch during their Partner Showcase. This timing suggests Microsoft’s announcement may have been delayed to avoid overshadowing Nintendo’s event.

Xbox fans panicked about exclusives like Starfield leaving the platform after rumours swirled, but Microsoft calmed the storm while hinting at a shift towards platform-agnostic experiences.  Xbox CEO Phil Spencer said, “[I have] a fundamental belief that over the next five or ten years… games that are exclusive to one piece of hardware are going to be a smaller and smaller part of the game industry.”

Players can buy Penitment for PS4/5 on the PlayStation Store for Rs 1,664.
