A new sequel to the acclaimed 1990 sports action drama “Days of Thunder” has officially been announced, nearly 40 years after the original hit theatres. Starring Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway, the film was initially set in motion back in 2024, when reports first surfaced that Cruise was in talks to star in and produce a follow-up.
Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway announced the sequel in a playful video filmed at a NASCAR racetrack. The clip also sees Hathaway, who is currently pregnant, joking about her plans for the film after welcoming her baby. “I am gonna have this baby, and we’re making the movie,” the American actress says, with Cruise quickly responding, “That’s a good idea.”
What to Know About the New Days of Thunder Movie Sequel
Paramount Pictures has confirmed that the “Days of Thunder” sequel will race into screens on 2 June 2028.
Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Cole Trickle, the talented and determined race car driver he played in the original Days of Thunder. Anne Hathaway joins the franchise in a major new role, is set to play a race car team owner and engineer. However, most plot details surrounding the sequel remain under wraps.
Jonathan Levine will direct the new Days of Thunder, while Cruise will produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Reports have also identified Will Staples as the screenwriter. The film is being shot for IMAX screens and will receive an exclusive theatrical release, including formats such as Dolby Cinema and 4DX.
This marks Cruise’s first major franchise commitment since scaling back “Mission: Impossible,” and it arrives alongside his other upcoming projects, another “Top Gun” instalment and the Alejandro González Iñárritu drama “Digger.”
The original Days of Thunder, released in 1990 and directed by Tony Scott, followed Cole Trickle as a gifted but inexperienced driver entering the world of NASCAR racing. He is recruited to a new team and guided by veteran crew chief Harry Hogge, played by Robert Duvall, as he attempts to turn raw talent into success on the race track.
